Is Compromise A Good Thing?

There is a time for everything. There is a time for eating; a time for fasting. There is a time for sleeping and a time for awakening. There is a time for compromise and a time for standing up.

If compromise didn’t exist, nothing would ever be agreed upon between people because of the diversity of opinions in the human race. If nothing was agreed upon, this world would never become a better place. Therefore, compromise is a good thing because it makes the world a better place. However, just like everything else in this world, there is such a thing as too much compromise. Just like there is a time for everything, there are certain times for compromising and other times for standing strong in belief.

The Great Compromise
By far, the biggest and most significant compromise in U.S. history was the “Great Compromise” of 1787. Delegates meeting at Independence Hall were attempting to create the government of a free nation, but the delegates of the small states and those of the large were at a standstill on the subject of legislative representation. The small states wanted equal representation and the large states wanted representation by population. Eventually, after many months of debate, each side compromised and solved the problem by splitting the legislative branch of government into two entities. In the end, this compromise made our nation stronger because it created not only strong people, but strong states as well.

This is the classic example of a good compromise. Sacrifice on both sides is essential to compromise, that’s for sure. However, sacrifice is only worth it if something is given up for something else of greater value. That is the definition of a good sacrifice, and good sacrifices make up a good compromise.

On the flipside of this, if you end up worse than you were before you compromised, then you (obviously) made a bad compromise. This is what it comes down to, though: there are certain things you should never compromise. For example, you should never compromise your unalienable rights to society. We have to keep in mind that the government really has no right to take away our unalienable rights, because they are given to us by God. There is no reason for us to compromise those rights with the government or talk to them about it.

Another thing that should never be compromised is your standards. If you know something to be morally right you should never compromise that, because there is nothing of greater value than doing what is morally right. In no circumstance could you sacrifice your morals for something better, because there is nothing of greater worth. Many would argue that it is better to die than to compromise one’s standards and I would wholeheartedly agree with that.

In conclusion, is compromise a good thing? Yes and no. There are certain times when compromise is appropriate and other times when it is not. There’s a time for everything, and when it comes to compromise, we need to evaluate what time it is. Only standing up for what is true and right brings God’s approval upon us. We need to compromise our selfish desires and unnecessary wants for things that are of greater value. Only then is compromise good.
